Subject: Invitation to a Human Rights Day Conference on Kashmir, 8-Dec-2016
You will be aware that the dispute between India and Pakistan over the status of Jammu & Kashmir has once again exploded into civil unrest. Since the beginning of July this unrest has resulted in over 100 fatalities and up to 14,000 injuries, many of them inflicted by the notorious pellet guns used by the security forces on the Indian side of the Line of Control.
Over the past 70 years this dispute has been associated with consistent violations of the human rights of Kashmiri citizens. Yet efforts to resolve the dispute by bilateral negotiations between India and Pakistan have been unsuccessful. There is increasing recognition that the international community has a key role to play if a permanent resolution to this tragic conflict is to be found.
The Kashmir Council-EU will take advantage of the opportunity provided by International Human Rights Day on 8th December to organize a high-level meeting to explore ways in which the rights of Kashmiris can be safeguarded while a peace process is negotiated and launched. As an organization with a strong record of supporting human rights initiatives we would welcome your participation in the conference.
The meeting will take place on the 8th of December at the European Parliament, room AH1-1 from 10h00 to 12h30 and you are cordially invited to participate. Please confirm your participation by email to the address below no later than 28th –Nov-2016.
There will be ample opportunities for all participants to speak at the discretion of the Chair.
I look forward to seeing you on the 8th December.
Ali Raza Syed,
Chairman Kashmir Council -EU
