Event description

Description

On September 21 at 5:30 pm, HI New Orleans, The New Orleans Citizen Diplomacy Council, and the Tulane Center for Global Education will co-host an event in celebration of the International Day of Peace, declared by the United Nations as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

As an affiliate member of the UN World Tourism Organization, HI USA hostels across the country host events to commemorate this day and the connection between travel and peace building. With HI New Orleans not quite open yet, we are hosting this event at The Shop at the Contemporary Arts Center.

The event will feature “peace postcards” to highlight the transformative power of travel and promote dialogue and introspection. Event attendees will be asked to complete a peace postcard with the following prompt:

“Travel changes the way we see the world. Describe something you’ve changed your mind about since traveling and meeting new people.”

Once completed, the postcards will be gathered and sent to the United Nations en masse; a physical representation of HI USA’s daily non-profit mission and commitment to peace building and a more tolerant world.

Additionally, this event will feature a 30 minute panel discussion with 3-4 emerging international leaders. These individuals are travelling as a part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program, administered in New Orleans by the NOCDC. The panel discussion will focus on the connection between travel and peace building and will be moderated by Dr. Annie Gibson of Tulane University.

Refreshments served. Free with RSVP. Space is limited.
