Event description

Description

This class is best suited to sewers who have an understanding of the basics and are comfortable setting up a machine and understanding fabric choices. If you have attended our beginner class this course is the perfect next step to take to becoming a confident tailor.

In this Intermediate course, you will create your own perfectly tailored, classic little black dress. Black material that works well for this pattern will be provided but if you fancy something more colourful you will have the opportunity during the first class to purchase alternative fabric. Students are encouraged to add their own personalised touches so each piece is individual to the wearer.

Over four weeks you will be taught tricks and professional techniques to ensure the perfect finish to your dress creating a garment that will be a long-lasting favourite.

If you have your own sewing machine and would like to learn on that you are encouraged to bring it with you, but here will be sewing machines available if needed.

Students will gain

  • An increased confidence for dressmaking

  • A Classic beautifully finished garment for portfolio

  • Knowledge of professional dressmaking techniques and tricks of the trade

Students will learn

  • Cutting out fabric pieces and the importance of cutting the pattern in the correct position on the fabric.

  • Pinning and assembling pattern pieces in the correct order.

  • Pressing techniques.

  • How to overlock all raw edges of fabric.

  • How to position a zip, Invisible or normal.

  • How to use a facing to ensure a professional finish on neckline and armholes.

  • How to finish a hem line.

Week 1 - To start the dress you will cut out fabric using the supplied paper pattern in your size, some of you will have time to start overlocking seams of cut fabric.

Week 2 - By this class, all the pieces are cut and you can begin to assemble, fit and alter the dress for a perfect fit, using each other to perfect your fitting skills.

Week 3 - You will have a basic dress by this stage so the more difficult elements are introduced such as inserting a lapped zip and finishing the bodice facing.

Week 4 - The outfit is close to completion in this class. You will finish and carry out any alterations after a final fitting you will hem the dress. You can even wear it to go home in.

This is a 4-week course, with limited places to ensure everyone receives quality tuition. Each class lasts 2 hours so there is no rush and you can take your time getting used to the processes and ask as many questions as you like. This course is the perfect opportunity to get to grips with many different sewing techniques in a fun relaxing atmosphere.

Please infom us of you dress size and whether or not you will need a machine provided -
