Class Description:

For intermediate to advanced painters who want to take their painting to the next level. This class focuses on three common problem areas for painters: Shadow, Trees & Clouds. We’ll spend 1 class focusing on each of these three areas.

Color in Shadows – Did you ever paint something that didn’t sit quite right? Does everything in your painting have a dark blue cast? Inaccurate color values might be the culprit. In this class we'll review the color theory behind shade, cast shadow, and reflected light.

Trees – Many people are inspired to paint them, but they are hard to get right. In this class we'll discuss techniques for drafting better looking trees & basic color mixing techniques for achieving natural looking green colors.

Clouds – Do your cloudscapes have an unnerving amount structure and regularity? Are your clouds an homage to René Magritte, when you were really hoping for more of a Monet kind of thing? In this class we'll discuss techniques for drafting more realistic looking clouds. We’ll also discuss color theory for the lighter end of the color spectrum.

Class Goals:

• advanced level color theory

• practical, task oriented instruction

• white spectrum color swatches

• 2 paintings each class

Intermediate to advanced painters who have either taken a basic painting class or self taught painters who have completed at least 4-6 painting. This class is a great refresher course for the experienced or professional artist. Students must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Students should bring their preferred water based painting materials & painting surfaces to class. Acrylics, watercolors, colored pencils or pastels, or anything with low VOC & easy clean up will work.

  • I recommend brining the following paint colors to class: Burn & Raw Sienna, Burnt & Raw Umber, Yellow Ochre, Yellow Cadmium, Red Cadmium, Cerulean Blue, and Ultramarine Blue. Feel free to bring more colors if you want.

  • Students should also bring artist pallet and brushes

  • Students may bring a desk or standing easel, otherwise they will be working on a flat tabletop.

  • Plan to bring at least 2 work surfaces (primed canvas or paper). Size can vary, but I recommend not going smaller than 8x8 or bigger than 18x24. We’ll spend about 20- 30 minutes on one painting & 1½ - 2 hours on the second painting.

Class Minimum:

This class will not run with fewer than 3 students.

Instructor Biography:

After working as a professional artist for 10 years, Amy McIver took a long break from painting. When she started to get serious about painting again, she realized many of her skills had atrophied. She developed this class series around areas that she's also struggled with in my paintings. She is looking to share my knowledge and to help other painters take their work to the next level.
