Description

Clinic Prerequisites

In addition to familiarity with climbing equipment and belay technique, participants in the Intermediate Ice Climbing Clinic must have at least one full season of ice climbing experience. Proficiency in swinging ice tools, crampon technique, and the fundamentals of ice climbing movement is required. Participants must be comfortable climbing Grade 3/4 ice (most of the climbs at the Sandstone Ice Park) on top rope to be ready for this clinic. If this does not describe you, it is best to refresh your skills in the Ice Climbing Basics Clinic. Participants who do not meet these prerequisites and choose to register for the Intermediate Clinic may be asked by the clinic instructor to not participate as this would take away from the ability of instructors to teach intermediate level skills.

Clinic Description

For those looking to take the next step in their ice climbing, this clinic will cover essential techniques to improve efficiency, climb harder, and have more fun this winter. Success in ice climbing is the result of perfecting technique and consistently utilizing the most efficient movement progression. The focus of this clinic will be on coaching participants to dial in their movements with an emphasis on efficiency. Additional topics include surmounting technical ice features such as pillars, thin ice, and bulges. This clinic will also introduce the basic principles of leading ice including screw placement and ice anchors. After this clinic you will have the skills needed to climb ice more efficiently than ever before and have added skills to your repertoire to advance in your ice climbing journey.

Equipment

Climbing Equipment is not included in the clinic with the exception of technical ice tools. Clinic participants should make arrangements to have a climbing harness, climbing helmet, mountaineering boots compatible with crampons, and crampons. Ice climbing equipment rental packages are available on site for $10 for use during the clinic. Additional information about climbing equipment rental is included in the Confirmation Email participants receive upon registration. In addition, participants need to come prepared with clothing, food, and beverages for a full day outside in the cold. A recommended gear list is provided in the Confirmation Email.

A note on clinic costs

Money raised from fees for Ice Climbing Clinics at the Sandstone Ice Fest go directly to supporting the work of the Minnesota Climbers Association (MCA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit that works to support the sport of outdoor climbing in Minnesota. Through donations, fundraisers, the support of the City of Sandstone and the time and dedication of volunteers, the MCA is able to maintain the ice farming operation at the Sandstone Ice Park every winter. For more information about all the work of the MCA, check out mnclimbers.org. Thanks for your support.
