Rabbi Perry and Rabbi Leah Berkowitz are founders of East Side Synagogue that stresses a contemporary, creative and spiritual Judaism. It has a special outreach to unaffiliated, disaffiliated and disinterested Jews and welcomes seekers and followers of all faiths. It emphasizes social justice to repair the world and the study that inspires and enlightens. Its annual High Holyday services, now in their 36th year are renowned for the thousands who attend and deepen their spiritual journey through its unique music, liturgy, and message.
Rabbis Berkowitz also lead the American Jewish Heritage Organization, a national organization that combats hatred, antisemitism, and bigotry of all kinds; promotes Jewish pride and spirituality, and addresses moral and social issues that lead to a better world for all.
Rabbis Berkowitz are known for their interfaith and intergroup work which they have engaged in for over three decades. Most recently, the American Jewish Heritage Organization, convened last November in the final days of the Obama Administration a national conference entitled "Against Hate" which brought together Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith leaders from across the country to be briefed and consult and strategize about hate and misunderstanding in America today.
