Event description

Description

About the Class: This 3 hour session focuses on the creation of spontaneous music. We'll draw inspiration from poetry, dance, visual art, film, games and other art forms to create new musical pieces through sound exploration. Students will also engage in meditative listening exercises, perform musical pieces that blur the lines between composition and improvisation, and create their own structured improvisations. This program is open to all types of artists, and no prior musical experience necessary. Participants are welcome to bring their own instruments, or use the instruments that will be provided to the class, such as penny whistles, recorders, and hand precussion instruments.

About the Instructor: Oboist, violinist, improvisor, and songwriter Rafael Natan holds a Masters of Music in Contemporary Improvisation, a concentration in Music in Education and a Bachelors of Music in oboe performance from New England Conservatory. During his time at NEC, Rafael also served as the teaching assistant for the core ear training and improvisation classes. He currently teaches in Boston and is also one of the organizers for Boston's Weird Folk Fest. A frequently touring performer, Rafael has studied and taught choral folk music in South Africa, the Republic of Georgia, and across Europe.
