Description

Intercultural Thinking for Intercultural Communication (3 weeks)

Monday May 29th, June 5th, June 12th

2-4pm

2 GPS Credits (Communication Skills)

Differences in expectations and modes of communicating can be a major source of friction in the classroom, lab, and in workplaces more generally. The aim of this workshop is to challenge students to (re)think about culture; to recognize the working of culture in their daily interactions with others; and to develop strategies for communicating and understanding across cultural differences.

The first week will establish foundational concepts and set the tone for how the discussion around culture and difference will be framed. Topics to be covered will include:
• Culture as meaning making
• Cultural location and intersectional identities
• Description, interpretation, and evaluation
• Framing and reframing
• Reflection vs. reflexivity

The second week will introduce some elements of intercultural communication. Topics to be covered will include:
• The Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (Communication Styles)
• Conversational Pacing and Pausing

The third week will review some of the initial concepts in light of the models of intercultural communication and will involve a guided discussion and exploration of developing strategies to incorporate these skills into daily life.

The workshop series will include short lectures, discussion, and experiential activities.

3 x 2 hour sessions for two GPS credits.
There will be a small amount (5-10 minutes) of recommended listening or watching (e.g., podcast or a YouTube video) before each session. There will also be a bit of “homework” between the sessions, but this will revolve around observing and reflecting upon interactions or events in daily life.
