Learn all the skills to be an accomplished outdoor enthusiast!

This weekend skills workshop is great for both novices and experienced outdoor enthusiasts.

Join us for an Interchapter weekend focused on learning the Hard Skills you need to confidently enjoy the outdoors. This course is mix of classroom, plus lots and lots of practical, hands-on, situational instruction.

- Choose the Best Backcountry Campsites
- Build a Fire - Five Ways & in the Rain
- Cook Over an Open Fire
- Canoe & Kayak Rescue
- Knots & Lines for Hikers, Campers, Boaters and Climbers
- Backcountry Navigation: Map, Compass and GPS
- Plan a Route
- Erase the Trace
- Anticipate & Manage Weather Conditions
- Oh Shoot! Now what?! Deal with Common Emergencies
- Forage for Edibles
- Gear Hacks
- and more!

In the evening, we will put those skills to use building a giant bonfire to roast marshmallows and wallow in s'mores. Bring musical instruments if you want to jam.

Bring your usual hiking and/or backpacking gear. Tents and sleeping pads may be borrowed from the camp.

This event is led by the chapter's Harriman Program Committee Volunteer Leaders. Paddling and yoga equipment at the camp are provided free of charge courtesy of the NY-NoJ Chapter. Personal canoes & kayaks are allowed on Breakneck Pond; no permit is required.

Registration

Registration is mandatory. Expect this program to fill quickly, so register early! Space is limited to 12 cabin and 44 tenting guests. Register by September 12 midnight for Reduced Early Bird Prices. Registered guests will receive an Information Sheet with the full program at least one week prior to the event.

Rate includes 2 nights accommodation (Fri & Sat), Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, instruction and program leadership provided by volunteer leaders. Optional Friday Dinner in the Dining Hall and Trail Lunches may be purchased separately before you finish registering or at the camp.

Accommodations

Choose to stay in either a newly renovated cabin or 3-sided shelter or a tent platform. Stone Lodge has 3 bedrooms (each with 4 bunks), a large common room, a full kitchen and ensuite bathrooms. Thick mattresses, blankets and pillows are provided. Each Beaver Brook Shelter and Tent Platform can accommodate 4 2-person backpacking tents, which can be borrowed from the camp. Secure bearbox is available for food storage. Modern bath houses are nearby and have hot showers and flush toilets.

Check in at the camp office when you arrive. Check-in time is Friday at 3 pm. Plan to arrive by 6 pm for dinner. Check-out time is Sunday at 11 am, although you are welcome to enjoy the camp until 3 pm.

Transportation

The camp is easily accessible by public transportation. Take either the NJ Transit/Metro North train from New York Penn Station to Tuxdeo, or the Shortline bus from the 42nd Street Port Authority to Tuxedo. Click HERE to see the Van Shuttle pickup schedule. Call the camp office (617-523-0636 ext 6522) in advance to reserve a seat ($5 one way).

The camp is about 45 minutes from NYC. Drive to Harriman State Park which is off the Palisades Parkway. The gate to the camp is on Lake Welch Parkway (41.217869, -74.106021). Drive up to the camp office to check-in and unload your gear. Then park in the big field.

We encourage carpooling but do not arrange it. Try starting a ride share on www.groupcarpool.com.

What to Bring

Bring sheets and pillow case or sleeping bag, tent, towels, yoga/hiking/swimming/paddling gear, sunscreen, bug spray, headlamp, hat, water bottle, and personal toiletries. Sheets and towels may be rented from the camp. Bring your usual hiking/backpacking gear.

Cancellation Policy

Reservations cancelled more than 14 days in advance receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee. Reservations cancelled 14 days or less in advance are not refundable. If the AMC must cancel a program, registrants will be notified and all fees will be refunded. Normal weather will not cancel this event.
