Event Details

We are pleased to offer this ninth annual somatics retreat at lovely La Casa De Maria. La Casa de Maria is a beloved sanctuary, for heart, mind, and spirit, nestled gently between mountain and sea. La Casa provides excellent retreat and conference facilities which historically was the location for all Fielding national sessions. It features serene guest accommodations, well-appointed meeting rooms, a full-service dining room, and gardens with outside gathering places.

Somatics, or conscious awareness of the body from within, has been found to improve well-being for individuals and in organizations. Come and experience a range of modalities for enhancing somatic awareness and improving practice skills. The sessions will be facilitated by Fielding faculty, doctoral students and alumni who are seasoned practitioners along with some outside guests.

Featured sessions will cover a range of topics and activities including: Somatics in Organizations; Creative Visualizations and Mediations; Kundalini Yoga and Sacred Circle Dances; Tibetian Bowl Session; drum circles; somatic dance and ecstatic dance sessions.

Intensive Facilitators:

Valerie Malhotra Bentz, PhD: Professor, Human and Organization Development, Fielding Graduate University, where she served as Associate Dean for research. She is a certified yoga teacher and massage therapist and practiced psychotherapy for twenty years. Her novel, Flesh and Mind, came out this year. She is the author of scholarly books and articles on transformative phenomenology, mindful inquiry, and effects of trauma on human development. A Fellow in Contemplative Practice of the American Association of Learned Societies, Valerie co-founded the Creative Longevity and Wisdom program at Fielding. Her current interests include somatics as a multidisciplinary approach, consciousness development, and Vedantic and Buddhist theories of knowledge. Valerie plays bassoon in the SBCC symphony.

Evelyn (Evi) Torton Beck, PhD: Professor Emerita, Women’s Studies, University of Maryland, holds PhDs in both Comparative Literature and Clinical Psychology (Fielding, 2004), as well as a certificate in Groups from AAGP (The American Association of Group Psychotherapy). She has been an Alum Research “Fellow” with Fielding’s Creative Longevity and Wisdom Program since its inception. Prime among her research interests is the healing power of art, especially the impact of movement and dance in human development over the lifespan. Her interviews with older women who participated in Sacred Circle Dance show that the effects of this dance practice parallel the qualities of positive, holistic aging. Through this healing practice of dance that is central to her own spiritual path, she aims to integrate mind, body, and spirit. She offers bi-monthly Sacred Circle Dance classes in the Washington DC metropolitan area, and workshops at professional meetings such as The National Association for Poetry Therapy, Positive Aging, and Ghost Ranch Educational Programs in New Mexico, as well as sessions on a variety of topics at Fielding Graduate University national sessions This is her second year of participating in the Somatics Intensive. Selected writings can be found at www.evibeck.com

Francesca Bolognini: Is from Cambria, California. She has been leading drum circles, women's retreats, and ecstatic dance for several decades.
