Event description

Description

The first of a six-lecture series, this introductory seminar provides more than a basic introduction to patent, copyright and trademark rights. It equips the participant with essential information to assess the business value of investing scarce resources in intellectual property (IP) protection. It also addresses how the decision to protect assets can affect the viability and growth of a business. Topics covered in an interactive setting include: (1) an overview of patent protection, (2) the role of the copyright in protecting software based products, artistic creations and commercial works generally and (3) when trademark registration serves a useful purpose in commercial endeavors. The seminar will introduce strategies for the minimizing cost of securing IP rights, discuss licensing considerations and introduce best practices to avoid infringement or other forms of liability. Principles and the use of trade secret protection are described with an introduction to options for structuring confidentiality agreements, as well as typical problems that can be avoided when entering into agreements for development services.

This event will be held at the Evans Library on the second floor in the Link conference room. Lunch will be included.
