Event description

Description

This second seminar in the IP series answers the question, “How can I use copyrights to protect and grow my business assets?”

Topics covered are relevant to start-ups and lean businesses, including vendor partnerships, rights to reuse content, and selling and advertising without encountering restrictions or liability under the copyright laws. Copyright considerations are also discussed using examples of website development, creation of marketing content and use of graphics in company branding. The participant will also learn about key provisions in contracts for services that help reduce the risk of copyright infringement when content is developed.

The seminar covers how legal rights are acquired and the scope of a copyright. With this background, infringement and fair use are explained using software and musical composition as examples. Differences in legal rights will be compared for instances in which the same idea is independently created and instances in which expressions of an idea are independently created. In this context, copyright enforcement rights and statutory rights to receive monetary damages are explained for unlicensed copying, performing of a work and use of an expression owned by another.

This event will be held at the Evans Library on the second floor in the Link conference room. Lunch will be included.
