Event description

Description

i2E is pleased to offer a free workshop for entrepreneurs and investors that will shed light on the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act on February 28, 2012 in Oklahoma City.

On September 16, 2011 President Obama signed into law the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act (H.R. 1249), authorizing sweeping changes of the US patent process. The Act changes from the present first-to-invent to a first-to-file standard for patent applications, expands the definition of prior art used to determine patentability, creates a post-grant review system that may make it easier to invalidate issued patents, changes fee provisions and attempts to improve the backlog of pending patent applications at the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). Some believe these changes will reduce the reduce frivolous litigation and create a more efficient process for patent approvals. Others believe these changes benefit large commercial entities to the disadvantage of universities, small entities and start-up companies.

A panel of experienced attorneys will provide a brief overview of changes already in effect and those that will phase in over time. Panelists will discuss modifications to internal corporate strategies and procedures and how entrepreneurs and universities should approach the new system to remain competitive.
