Description

Panel discussion as part of Academic Book Week 2019

It is commonly understood that the academic publishing process is based on principles which uphold the tenets of integrity. The traditional role of publishers has been to act as gatekeepers: to ensure that the highest standards of integrity are maintained, and that content is original and verified.

In journals publishing, the standards are clearly defined. A longstanding advisory body, the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), helps set those standards, and is available to advise when they are breached. Established codes of conduct stipulate best practice for authorship, peer review, conflicts of interest, and content re-use.

In academic book publishing, in contrast, common guidelines and standards are lacking. Research and publishing integrity are gaining prominence across all subject areas; plagiarism and a clear definition of authorship are particular issues. To solve and prevent these problems an industry-wide set of standards is needed.

What would guidelines for research integrity in academic book publishing look like? What are the major differences between journals and books that should underpin such guidelines? Which are the most urgent issues to address? What are the hurdles we need to overcome? Who should take the lead?

Springer Nature invites you to discuss these questions and more. We will provide an overview of why integrity matters in publishing, how we manage this in our organisation, and how a specific approach for book publishing could be collaboratively developed.

Speakers:

  • Niels Peter Thomas, Managing Director Books, Springer Nature
  • Suzanne Farley, Research Integrity Director, Springer Nature
  • Tamara Welschot, Head of Advisory and Assurance, Springer Nature
