Event description
Finding Our Rhythm: Inner Resources and Inspiring Practices

About this Event

This workshop series is suitable for people who are navigating through their cancer journey as well as for those providing assistance and support. This workshop series is also suitable for people who prefer gentle integrative practices or who are new to mind-body-energy practices and are trying to determine which forms may resonate best with them. The workshop series focuses on practices that help release stress, build resilience, and gain serenity. It includes mindfulness-based practices such as meditation and conscious breathing. It also includes gentle strengthening postures, gentle flowing movements, body-energy sensing, and inspirational sounds and rhythms that help energize the body while releasing tension. Postures and movements are performed in a mindful, meditative manner and coordinated with the breath to improve the flow of oxygen and enhance the benefits of the practice. Most practices are performed sitting on a chair or standing, focusing on those that can be easily and safely performed during short breaks from our daily routines, and even while waiting for a doctor’s appointment or medical procedure. Some practices may be performed sitting on a bolster or lying on a floor mat, but the participants may sit on a chair if they prefer. Each session ends with a long deep resting period. Handouts with relevant information are provided.

About the instructor MariaLi Ramos-Cancel, Ph.D.

(Psychology Professor with Yoga Teacher Training)

I am a Psychology professor, a Kundalini Yoga teacher, and cancer survivor. About 22 years ago I was introduced to Kundalini Yoga, which focuses heavily on meditation and conscious breathing. Since then, I have been taking classes and workshops in Kundalini Yoga, and I have completed teacher training in Kundalini Yoga and Yoga Nidra. I have continued to take advanced training in meditation and conscious breathing; as well as training that focus on body-energy sensing, mindful flowing movements, therapeutic touch, and relaxation techniques. My mother was the person who introduced me to Kundalini Yoga and other mind-body wellness systems. She was a long-time practitioner of Kundalini Yoga and Qigong. Performing these practices with my mother during her journey with cancer brought us closer together and encouraged me to pursue training in different mind-body wellness systems. These practices were also helpful in dealing with the challenges of our own personal cancer journey. Sharing these practices with others who have also been impacted by cancer is something that is close to my heart, and I have been doing for some time.
