Description

Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy Training - Winter 2019, NYC

A New Paradigm for Treating Addictive and Risky Behavior

Andrew Tatarsky, PhD, Director and Jenifer Talley, PhD, Assistant Director

ABOUT THE TRAINING

Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy (IHRP) is a treatment for individuals struggling with addictive and risky behavior, trauma and other mental health issues. An alternative to the abstinence-only approach, IHRP is a model that incorporates psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and body-oriented practices to treat the broad spectrum of addictive behaviors.

This three-day intensive training will explore the current scientific revolution in addiction treatment. This consists of a move away from the disease model toward a psychobiosocial process model for understanding addiction and a shift from an abstinence-only to an Integrative Harm Reduction approach to treatment. Participants will learn the Seven Therapeutic Tasks of IHRP along with specific skills to facilitate positive change including empathic listening, mindfulness, urge-surfing, microanalysis, unwrapping the urge, embracing ambivalence, decisional balance and the Ideal Use Plan. There will be skill demonstrations and participants will have the opportunity to practice during role-play activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring case material and clinical questions to the training.
