Class Outline

Polyvagal theory presents a framework to understand the science of safety, with important implications for clinical practice. This workshop will explore the clinical applications of polyvagal theory with a particular focus on working with trauma. Emphasis will be placed on using intuitive, everyday language and translating the theory into concrete interventions psychotherapists can use with clients when they are back in the office the next day.

Some questions that will be addressed in this workshop:

  • how trauma changes human’s physiological response and devastate emotional regulation
  • how to understand hardwired survival responses in the nervous system and work with these survival programs in trauma treatment
  • how to understand stress-trauma continuum
  • how to help your clients understand and manage their body’s response to triggers
  • how to use non-verbal cues to create safety in the therapy room
  • how the body affect cognitions, narratives and core beliefs
  • how to use psychoeducation effectively to rewire the brain
  • how to utilize polyvagal theory to transform trauma to resilience
  • how to understand the adaptive function of diagnosis and support client agency

Instructor

Ling Lam, Ph.D., MFT is a Lecturer in the Counseling Psychology Department at Santa Clara University where he teaches classes on complex trauma, psychotherapy theories, multicultural psychotherapy, couple therapy and family therapy. Before joining the faculty at Santa Clara University, he has taught graduate levels counseling psychology courses at California Institute of Integral Studies, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, and John F. Kennedy University. Before he became a licensed psychotherapist, Ling graduated from Stanford University with degrees in Electrical Engineering and was on the founding engineering team that invented HDMI.

* describe how polyvagal theory enhances traditional psychotherapies such as object relations, cognitive behavior and existential therapies
