Event description

Description

Presenter: Allyn Rodriguez, Psy.D

This workshop will educate therapists on the basic components of DBT, discuss assessment of client’s suitability for DBT treatment, and review the theoretical connections between DBT interventions and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Course Description

This workshop will cover the basic components of DBT treatment and how in particular DBT Skills Group may be a used as complimentary adjunct therapy to psychodynamic work. It will utilize experiential and psychoeducational methods to cover the foundational content of the four modules as clients experience them in group and explore the theoretical connections between psychodynamic theory and DBT interventions. Similarities and differences between DBT skills group and process group will be reviewed and discussed with regard to patient symptoms and functioning as well as other characteristics related to clinical progress. More specifically, DBT will be compared and contrasted with Transference Focused Psychotherapy, a manualized psychodynamic treatment described by Kernberg (2015). Case material will be discussed in order to illustrate client readiness for process group as well as how DBT skills may be integrated as appropriate into process group work.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will:

  1. List three symptoms addressed in DBT treatment.
  2. Describe dialectical behavioral framework from the four modules of DBT: Mindfulness, Emotional Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Distress Tolerance.
  3. Identify and explain client’s need for focused interventions for emotional dysregulation and distress tolerance.
  4. Demonstrate integration of psychodynamic psychotherapy with DBT techniques through case presentation material.
