Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) Level 3 Coaching 

This ILM accredited programme is delivered by the British School of Coaching, a global leader in developing coaching in school-based contexts, and is designed to support you in developing impactful coaching approaches within your role.

The ILM describes this qualification as designed for people in their first management roles, including team leaders and first-line managers. The programme is for individuals seeking to develop the tools, knowledge and confidence to coach people as part of their normal working role, thereby building capacity and increasing effectiveness within these teams.

This programme is delivered through the academic year and follows a gold-standard coaching delivery model which includes face-to-face course delivery, online structured continuous support as well as three individual supervision sessions.

Who can apply?

This programme is aimed at first-line managers with an interest in coaching and responsibility for leading a team.

What’s involved?

There are three mandatory units in the Award qualification;

  • ‘Understanding good practice in workplace coaching’ covers the role of coaching, basic coaching processes and the abilities and qualities you need to be a good coach.
  • ‘Reflecting on workplace coaching skills’ will give you the tools to analyse and improve your own performance as a coach.
  • ‘Undertaking coaching in the workplace’ requires you to plan and carry out at least 6 hours of coaching, with supervision and support.


The programme is delivered over two blocks of 2 taught days within a 12 month period and with an emphasis on coaching practice and includes 3 written assignments and 6 coaching sessions (3 of which observed, 2 face-to-face where possible and 1 through Skype).

Judith Barton, Director of Coaching and Mentoring, The British School of Coaching

Facilitator Bio

As the Founder and Director of Coaching and Mentoring at BSC, Judith leads the practice with 25 years experience of developing senior leaders in government and private sectors.  She has worked extensively in developing and delivering all of our programmes and works closely with our Director of Quality Assurance to ensure the highest professional standards.   In recent years she has led our work with the Crown Prosecution Service in the UK and for a major Education Group in the Middle East.  She also provides coaching supervision to the UK senior civil service including the Home Office.  Judith has led our expansion into the Middle East and in addition to delivering our in house and open programmes in the Region she enjoys her role as Executive Coach to Business & Professional Women in the Gulf following her appointment as Chief Assessor to three prestigious business awards. Her passion is using a highly effective solution-focussed approach in working with individuals to achieve their goals.
