INSITUM OPEN TALKS: Healthy Outcomes
Event Information
Description
Public health is a ripe ground for game-changing innovation. From chronic disease care management and integrating social determinants of health to operationalizing population health strategy, improving and enhancing health services for the general population is #2 on the Healthcare Executive Group’s list of 10 most important challenges of 2018.
Come join companies working in the public health space as they engage with these issues on a panel as part of Insitum Open Talks in partnership with the Institute of Design. They will share their experiences working on the issues surrounding population health, particularly as it concerns vulnerable populations.
They will discuss and brainstorm many of the tough and complex questions affecting our healthcare systems today.
- On what scale is equitable access and continuity of care possible?
- How can we put human experience at the core of managing human health conditions?
- What role can digital technology play in health data collection and facilitating behavior change?

MODERATOR
Mark Jones (SD Lab and Institute of Design) is an award-winning service designer and senior thought leader whose extensive design background and broad experience in research and service methodologies allow him to uncover user issues, convert them into actionable design strategy, and create memorable service experiences that not only serve customers’ needs, but inspire true, long-term loyalty. Mark loves challenging the status quo and is an acknowledged framework junky. As VP of Design at UnitedHealthcare and Managing Director of IDEO Chicago, Mark has worked on projects that include designing a new service strategy for Walgreens, developing a healthcare toolkit called Gutcheck that helps patients achieve better cancer-screening outcomes, and designing new systems for increasing access to healthcare in rural areas. In addition to leading SD Lab, Mark is a Visiting Industry Professor at the Institute of Design teaching Service Design.
PANELISTS
Alicia Kranjc (NowPow) is a Chicago native who studied Manufacturing and Design Engineering at Northwestern University, establishing a background in design, operations, and mechanical engineering. The combination of form and function is her passion and an inspiration for all of her work. After graduation, she joined the product development team at NowPow, a MedTech company on Chicago’s south side that focuses on addressing Social Determinants of Health by cultivating a connection between patients and the community resources that meet their needs. She enjoys designing and managing the NowPow product suite, working at a company founded and operated by women, traveling, and exploring the Chicago music and restaurant scene.
Tom MacTavish (Institute of Design) is an assistant professor at IIT Institute of Design (ID). Prior to joining ID, he directed Motorola Labs’ Center for Human Interaction Research with research laboratories in Phoenix (AZ), Schaumburg (IL), and Shanghai (China). Earlier in his career, he led the Human Interface Technology Center based in Atlanta (GA) for NCR Corporation and served as director of engineering for NCR’s wireless communications and networking engineering group in Utrecht, The Netherlands. His research is focused on Persuasive Interaction Design and understanding what theories, methods, and techniques can be used to provide people with computer assisted support for achieving their behavior change goals. He is a member of the scientific committee of the International Conference on Persuasive Technologies that is held annually in locations around the world.
During the past year, with Tom, students from ID have been researching and designing an interactive mobile application to better support caregivers of children with asthma. The project builds on design research conducted for the Coordinated Healthcare Interventions for Childhood Asthma Gaps in Outcomes Trial (CHICAGO 1) that resulted in a new patient discharge tool named the “CHICAGO Action Plan after emergency department discharge” (CAPE). UIC funded a team to create an interactive system to collect and manage health care related data and it resulted in a mobile application named the Digital CHICAGO Asthma Plan for Everyone commonly known as the “digital CAPE” or “dCAPE.” The following design students are conducting research on the next generation dCAPE as part of their work toward a Master of Design degree: Ketshi Bavishi, Jinjia Huang, Yi Peng, and Fanny Tan.
Molly Martin, MD, MAPP (UIC CHECK) is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and a Fellow in the Institute for Health Research and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Martin is an established leader in the fields of behavioral intervention design and testing, especially as they relate to community health workers. She is also active in local and national policy efforts that target health disparities. Her research focuses on community models to improve health, specifically the CHW model. She is particularly interested in asthma, oral health, and obesity in children. Dr. Martin has been the principal investigator on multiple NIH-funded projects that test community-based interventions targeting these conditions. She serves on the Executive Committee for Community Health Worker Section of the American Public Health Association and on the Board of the Chicago Asthma Consortium. Dr. Martin was a member of the State of Illinois Community Health Worker Advisory Board which developed recommendations for the community health worker workforce requirements in Illinois. As a complement to her research, Dr. Martin sees patients in the Mile Square Health Center and participates in resident and student education.
Andrea Pappalardo, MD (UIC CHECK) is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is board certified in three specialties: internal medicine, pediatrics, and allergy/immunology. She specializes in the care of patients across the life spectrum with allergic and immunologic diseases. Dr. Pappalardo serves as the Asthma Medical Director in the Coordinated Healthcare for Complex Kids or CHECK program where she oversees and trains community health workers and provides consultative and educational services to key community and clinical partners. Her research focuses on school and community-based interventions to reduce health disparities in asthma. She believes strongly in increasing sub-specialty access in vulnerable populations and provides school-based allergy and asthma specialty care through Mobile Care Chicago’s Asthma Van one day a week in addition to her clinics at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Tonya S. Roberson, MPH, DTR (CEERIAS) is an Assistant Research Director at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received her M.P.H. from DePaul University and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Community Psychology from National Louis University. As a Dietetic Technician, she has a profound passion for nutrition and its relationship to health and chronic disease. Tonya is committed to giving generously of her time and talents through her community organizing efforts and outreach work to educate audiences about the importance of making healthier lifestyle choices to improve and maintain a good quality of life.
