Event description

Description

Insider|Outsider features the artwork collected by the East Point Peace Academy, from currently incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, Insider/Outsider does the interpersonal work of liberation, by freeing the captive imagination. EPPA believes that in order for us to create a peaceful world, we need to invest as much into peace as the military invests into war. Investment in creation is peace. Investment in imagination is peace. Investment in self-expression is peace. The visual arts are a strategy of resilience in the hands of people impacted by the prison industrial complex. Artmaking becomes a way to propose a self-, family-, community-, and world-portrait, that depicts a world that is boundless in the face of systems that are built to wall, cage, and diminish humanity

The work in Insider|Outsider is closely aligned with the folk art, vernacular art, and visionary art of self-taught arts movements. The paintings and drawings show masterful uses of found materials and should be viewed as material commitments by the artists, to moving their visions from sparks of inspiration to material expressions of liberation. From pencil drawings, to pastels, to ballpoint pen renderings, the work shown in this exhibit, reminds us that nonviolent social change is at hand, is at brush stroke and might be most articulated by the most marginalized of us.
