Inside the IEP: What Every Parent and Professional Should Know
Overview
In this session, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process, including what an IEP is, why it exists, and how it is developed and implemented from initial referral through completion. The session will also cover how students are referred for evaluation, the types of assessments used, and how eligibility for special education services is determined. Participants will learn to interpret key sections of the IEP document—such as present levels, measurable goals, accommodations, and service delivery—and build confidence in effectively advocating for student needs by communicating concerns, asking informed questions, and requesting appropriate supports during meetings. Finally, the session will address common barriers in the IEP process, such as unclear goals, limited communication, and inconsistent follow-through, while exploring strategies to overcome these challenges.
