Event description

Description

In the 1800s, a group of landscape artists known as the "Hudson River School" dedicated themselves to capturing the beauty and inspiration of New York's Hudson River Valley through the stroke of a brush. While the art style's popularity waxed and waned over a century, its legacy was cemented beginning in the 1960s, with no signs of slowing down — now's your chance to learn about one of America's most definitive art movements, with a rare look inside the original house and art studio of one of its most prominent members.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the art, property, and life of Jasper Cropsey, one of the most prolific landscape artists of the mid-19th century American art movement known as the Hudson River School, which included landscape artists painting scenes of the Hudson River Valley and surrounding area.

Led by the Director at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, which was created in 1977 for the purpose of preserving and displaying the home and paintings of Jasper F. Cropsey, our exclusive weekend experience in the small Hudson River village of Hastings-on-Hudson will include:

  • An overview of artist Jasper Cropsey (1823-1900), from his decision at the age of 19 to abandon his budding career as an architect to pursue a life in art (spoiler alert: his parents were not happy), to his prolific landscape art that is now featured in prominent locations including the National Gallery of Art and White House, to why he achieved true fame over a half-century after his passing
  • A private tour of the Cropsey Homestead at Ever Rest — originally built in the 1830s for local industrialist William Saunders, this home (now on the National Register of Historic Houses) was purchased by Cropsey in 1886, and contains much of the original furniture and art from when the house was his residence and studio throughout the late 19th century
  • An exploration of the Newington-Cropsey Foundation's Gallery of Art, which houses the bulk of the Foundation's collection of paintings by Jasper Cropsey — as a bonus, we'll visit rooms not open to the public that feature original Jasper Cropsey artifacts including paintings and architectural drawings

See you there!
