Event description

Description

Get the buzz on bees! Learn all there is to know about raising honey bees with Queens Farm’s master beekeeper.

This course is designed for beginners and will cover basic biology and anatomy of honey bees as well as apiculture essentials such as colony care, honey extraction, equipment, disease prevention, and more. Classes begin in the fall and run through the following summer so you have support with your hives through an entire season! The course includes 10 sessions in total, 6 Thursday evenings and 4 Saturday afternoons in our apiary.

Instructor Walter Blohm has over 35 years of experience in apiculture, and has maintained the bee yard at the Queens County Farm Museum since 1980. In addition to teaching, Walter is a long-time practitioner of apitherapy and a member of the Long Island Beekeepers Club and the Eastern Apicultural Society.

Thursday evening sessions (7:30 pm–9:00 pm): Oct 18, Nov 1, Dec 6, Jan 3, Feb 7, Mar 7
Saturday afternoon apiary sessions (1:00 pm–3:00 pm): Hive installation either Mar 30 or Apr 6 (dependent on shipping), May 4, Jun 1, Jun 29

Note: The Adult Education Program at Queens Farm is intended for individuals 18 years of age and older.
