Description

Inside and Outside the Visiting Room: Supporting the Relationships and Wellbeing of Children with Incarcerated Parents

Please join us for a special See Us, Support Us event! See Us, Support Us (SUSU) is a month-long annual campaign to increase supports for children with incarcerated parents.

The Osborne Association, the New York Initiative for Children of Incarcerated Parents (NYCIP), and The Prisoner Reentry Institute (PRI) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice have partnered to convene a symposium highlighting the diverse perspectives on visiting between children and their incarcerated parents. A dynamic program puts the voices of children and families in the forefront and will incorporate clips from two recently released documentaries—Tres, Maison, and Dasan, and The Sentence—into discussions with family members, formerly incarcerated parents, advocates, a filmmaker, and criminal justice stakeholders. Topics discussed will include the need to offer visiting that is child-centered, family-friendly, and accessible; how to support positive visiting experiences; the impact of lengthy sentences on families; and concrete action steps to remove current barriers to visiting and support the well-being of children with incarcerated parents.
