In this collection of paintings and illustrations, Mahader Tesfai uses diverse forms of visual symbolism [incorporating overlapping faces, text, line work, and symbols] to explore the relationship between African art and the communicative powers of graphic systems.
Mahader Tesfai is an Eritrean visual artist residing in Oakland California. Since 2002, Mahader has been using found objects, acrylic, oil, and enamel to create beautiful, empowered works works of art that affirm the nuanced beauty and complexity of African identities and communities, whether in diaspora or their homelands.
