The sharing economy has matured to the point that Uber and Airbnb are entrenched as household names. This session explores how the sharing economy has affected mobility, what unintended consequences have arisen, and how its rapid and “disruptive” development will inform the connected/autonomous vehicle future.
Susan Shaheen, Ph.D.
Susan Shaheen is an Adjunct Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Director of Innovative Mobility Research at the University of California, Berkeley. She served as the Policy and Behavioral Research Program Leader at California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways from 2003 to 2007, and as a special assistant to the Director's Office of the California Department of Transportation from 2001 to 2004.
Susan's interest in environmentally- and socially-beneficial technology applications led her to focus her doctoral dissertation on "smart" carsharing, linked to transit in the mid-1990s. She designed and tested the CarLink I and II pilot programs, using advanced technologies to support commuter carsharing services from 1997 to 2002. In addition, she has maintained an extensive database on carsharing trends in North America for over a decade.
Michael Manville, Ph.D.
Michael Manville, a new assistant professor of urban planning, is returning to UCLA Luskin after receiving his MA and Ph.D. in urban planning from UCLA Luskin. Dr. Manville is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University. His research examines the willingness of people and communities to finance different government services, and the tendency of local governments to hide the costs of transportation in the property market. Dr. Manville is particularly interested in how land use restrictions intended to fight traffic congestion can influence the supply and price of housing.
