9:30 am -10:15 am: An Introduction to React Native
8th Floor Stage 1 - Presented by SmartLogic

React Native is a modern open-source framework for native app development developed and maintained by the team at Facebook. React Native is a cross-platform development tool, but unlike previous options, React Native uses native platform-specific interface components, making it both easy to program and highly performant.

In this talk, we’ll provide some high-level historical context for the origins of React Native, and then we’ll dive into some basics of how to get started building apps. We’ll also outline which cases we find to be the best match for React Native and when other approaches are a better fit, and share a couple of examples of apps we’ve built at SmartLogic using React Native along with tips and lessons learned.

10:30 am -11:15 am: Developing a Successful Engineering Apprentice Program
8th Floor Stage 1 - Presented by SmartLogic

Launched in 2018, the SmartLogic developer apprentice program offered three junior developers the opportunity to accelerate their careers through a paid apprenticeship. We were able to solve for an internal hiring need and provide an alternative pathway for community members into the development profession.

An apprenticeship program is a valuable tool for any team facing a talent gap or working to increase diversity and inclusion, both common scenarios in the tech industry. We’d like to share our success story along with some key factors and takeaways for any other tech teams out there who might be interested in implementing a similar program.

Big Data Analytics In Decision Ag
Presented by Sri Sabesan, CEO for Tier 1 Digital

Big data and analytics are helping to improve and transform a multitude of industries in the modern world. The most impactful thing such technologies do is provide detailed and real-time insights into operational and financial activities. In agriculture, this very thing is playing out as we speak. Every grower has a goal for their operation. Some of the more commonly cited are around improving profitability and efficiency, reducing the cost of an operation, or increasing product value. To achieve each goal, growers must make better decisions and move beyond the use of general knowledge from ground experiments, which can only carry them so far. No business is the same, and there is now an increasing need for information generated in a location-specific manner, providing a solution which fits in line with what each grower needs. Through big data and connected devices, every one of the goals around profitability, efficiency and cost management are not only achievable, but completely realistic. The question is less about whether or not the technology offers benefits — it indeed does — and more about the “how” it achieves such a thing. In this session, we will discuss few ways in which big data in agriculture is improving conditions or operations.

What Does The Future Of Production Agriculture Look Like - What Role Will Autonomy Play
Presented by Luke Derby, PLM Marketing Manager for CNH Industrial

Autonomy is one of many factors that will change the landscape of the future of Production Ag. However, there are many areas of technology that have developed significantly in the last few years that also add significant improvements to our operations before we reach autonomy. Three of these areas include:

Internet of Things (IoT) and Connectivity

  • Telematics for Agronomic, Animal, and Equipment Services

  • Remote Management

  • Marketing and Sales

Data Analytics (Big Data)

  • What is the value in what’s collected and what gaps do we need to collect?

  • How do we manage data and security?

  • Sources of data; human, machine, satellite, sensor, history

Machine Automation

  • Increase quality and consistency of product

  • Increase safety in operation and in food safety

Agriculture will be in greater need of autonomy and autonomous vehicles more than any other industry. Especially as we look to find a solution to meeting the world’s demand for quantity and quality of food for the growing population. A few of the topics that drive this conversation are:

Labor

  • What are the labor needs, costs, and how do we compete for labor?

  • Need to increase technology to compensate for operator skill variability

Time

  • Autonomy can be a force multiplier, limited weather windows

  • Get more time back for the farms to be with family, quality of life

  • Cost- Where are the cost savings and where are the additional costs?

FeedTech - How Innovation In Feed Are Impacting The Future of Our Food
Presented by Sam Glickstein , Founder & CEO for Biotrophics and Paul Rosenberger, Founder & CEO of Greatalga

The demands we make of our food producing animals are getting higher each day. In order to enable our livestock and fish to produce optimum levels of the highest quality protein, it is absolutely essential that we provide them with the right quality and type of feed. This is where the challenge begins. Feed accounts for 50% of the cost of raising animals or fish. Fishmeal is not sustainable as the primary protein supplement to feed and alternatives are required. Learn about how two Baltimore startups are developing insects and algae as leading solutions to this feed challenge.
