Presentation Topic:

Defending Against, Investigating, and Responding to UNC2452 Intrusions - The Threat Actor Behind SOLARWINDS SUNBURST Supply Chain Attack

UNC2452, the threat actor behind the SolarWinds SUNBURST supply chain attack, is one of the most advanced, disciplined, and elusive threat actors Mandiant has ever investigated. UNC2452’s operators have a mastery of both offensive and defensive skills - and have used that knowledge to refine their intrusion techniques to hide in plain sight. They’ve compromised dozens of organizations in the government, NGO, technology, security, telecommunications, and education sectors. They leverage several attack vectors to obtain access to victim environments and use creative and clandestine techniques to maintain persistent access. We will discuss their tradecraft observed in several victim environments and discuss ways organizations can better defend their networks from this threat actor and the other actors that will emulate UNC2452 in the future.

Keynote Speaker 1:

Charles Carmakal is Senior Vice President and Strategic Services CTO for Mandiant. He oversees a team that has helped over a thousand organizations respond to complex security breaches orchestrated by foreign governments, organized criminals, and political hacktivists. Charles has 20+ years of experience helping organizations become more resilient to cyber attacks, including significant experience helping Fortune 500 organizations build and enhance security programs to combat advanced attacks. He frequently provides strategic security guidance to executive leadership and boards of directors.

Charles has conducted television and print interviews by media organizations including 60 Minutes, CNBC, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Bloomberg, New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press and NBC News. He regularly provides security briefings to national law enforcement agencies, international intelligence agencies, and senior politicians and lawmakers.

Prior to joining FireEye, he served in various leadership roles within PwC in the United States and Australia. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Decision and Information Sciences from the University of Florida.

Keynote Speaker 2:

Nader Zaveri has over 14 years of experience in IT security, infrastructure and risk management. Nader has created and led entire practices and service offerings, as well as maintaining a book of sale with dozens of clients.Nader has also spent several years with major consulting firms where he has led and executed cybersecurity and risk assessments against industry frameworks (ISO 27001/27002, NIST 800 series, IEC 62443, NERC CIP, GDPR, and HIPAA / HITECH). He has managed IT infrastructure and controls transformations while providing recommendations for strategic and tactical security/compliance program enhancements. He has also assisted client’s incident response and remediation efforts with his information security knowledge and experience by providing strategic short, medium, and long-term remediation recommendations to directors and C-level executives, while also providing tactical recommendations to specialists, to improve the security posture of an organizations.

Nader also has experience with leading transformational projects over infrastructure and processes with technical and organizational change components in response to rapidly evolving business needs and regulatory requirements. He has also facilitated leadership workshops and tabletop exercises to assess, test, and enhance an organizations incident monitoring and response capabilities.
