Event description

Description

Medicine is at a turning point, largely due to CRISPR, genome-editing biotechnology that makes it possible for human beings to alter DNA with relative ease. Potential CRISPR (aka: clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) applications are many from correcting genetic defects, to treating and preventing the spread of diseases, to improving crops.

But, progress in this field has been so rapid that the conversation around potential ethical, societal, and safety issues is racing to catch up. What happens when the use of gene editing shifts from being a therapeutic tool to an enhancement tool for various human characteristics? Should we make changes that could fundamentally affect future generations without having their consent? If we “fix” one DNA section, will another section be adversely altered?

CRISPR technology is certainly here to stay. So how do we bravely move forward?

Join us, and featured speaker Dr. Rachid El Beijani from the Davidson Biology Department, on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 from 5-7:30 pm at The Hurt Hub@Davidson.
