Series: Optimizing Recovery in Individuals with Co-Occurring Disorders

Presented by Dr. Mary DeJoseph

Individuals with Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) have a unique array of strengths and obstacles as they approach and assume active ownership of their recovery journey. As peer professionals, it is our responsibility to recognize signs of co-occurring disorders, to understand how these challenges affect every dimension of wellness, and to provide flexible, dynamic strategies and supports to optimize both individual and family recovery. This series of workshops will challenge participants to broaden their understanding and approach to recovery, addiction, addiction recovery, how mental health challenges and addiction interact, the roles and needs of the family, barriers to recovery and how to dismantle them.

Day Three: Individual and Family Education for Individuals with Co-Occurring Disorders

This workshop will offer professionals an overview of treatment and recovery in order to enhance their ability to discuss treatment, levels of care, recovery, and family participation with individuals and families affected by COD. Participants will review treatment modalities and stages of recovery as well as Medication Assisted Therapy. We will explore the question: "Why can't they just stop?" The "family illness" will also be considered as it relates to substance use by the individual and family members. Family rules and roles and codependence will be addressed. Recovery resources for individuals and family members will be discussed, including self-help groups and WRAP.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the Principles and Levels of Care for Treatment of COD
  • Describe Medication Assisted Therapy
  • Identify Stages of Recovery
  • Recognize the impact of the "Family Illness" and discuss family roles, rules and characteristics
  • Educate family/significant others about recovery Planning and WRAP as a tool
  • Identify Self-Help resources for individual, family and significant others
