About this event

Journey to the Center of Camp

Indigenous & Media Community Roundtable

In partnership with We Are Still Here Minnesota, MIGIZI, and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, Minnesota Public Radio will host a third community conversation among media professionals and Indigenous community members at the new Hoċokata Ti Cultural Center in Shakopee, Minnesota.

The name, purpose and experience of Hoċokata Ti are filled with meaning. In Dakota, it means “lodge at the center of the camp,” referencing the circle to which everyone belongs. Aligned with the sun at solstice, the structure’s design blends into the landscape and surrounding Dakota homelands.

This will be a special journey of learning and exchange, hosted by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) in a space that primarily serves as a meeting place reserved for SMSC members. Participants can experience the Center’s exhibit “Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake” before sharing a meal and hearing from several Indigenous leaders and up-and-coming media practitioners who are working at multiple levels to tell more accurate and complete stories about Indigenous issues.
