Event description

Description

Make friends, share stories, and join the conversation. Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood series that brings people together for film screenings and community-driven conversations.

Featuring documentaries seen on the PBS series Independent Lens, Indie Lens Pop-Up draws local residents, leaders, and organizations together to discuss what matters most, from newsworthy topics to family and relationships.

On April 16 we are screening Charm City.

During three years of unparalleled violence in Baltimore, Charm City delivers an unexpectedly candid, observational portrait of the police, citizens, and government officials left on the frontlines. In these divisive times, Charm City offers humanity as common ground. Click here to learn more about Independent Lens.

After the film, join an intimate kitchen table conversation with the Carter family of St. Paul as they offer perspectives on the film's themes and their deep roots in St. Paul. The panel will include:

  • Melvin Carter Jr., MNHS Press author and former St. Paul police officer
  • Ramsey County Commissioner Toni Carter
  • St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter III
  • Anika Carter Ward, director of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Center for Prevention
  • Alanna Carter Galloway, area vice president CWA local 7250
  • The discussion will be moderated by Anthony Galloway, executive director of ARTS Us Center for the African Diaspora

The family will explore the relationships they have built in St. Paul neighborhoods that have nurtured the family across generations. And, through public service—policing, county and city government work, union organizing, and education—they have nurtured the city of St. Paul.
