Event description

Description

Enjoy refreshments and the company of Indiana Landmarks members, staff and board at our Holiday Open House in Indianapolis, one of four we’re offering around the state.

You’ll enjoy hors d’oeuvres, wine, soft drinks, and coffee at the Glossbrenner Mansion on the northwest corner of 32nd and Meridian streets. The Walther Cancer Foundation donated the property to Indiana Landmarks to guarantee its long-term protection. After interior repairs, removing an incompatible addition, and restoring the north facade, we sold it with a protective covenant in 2015 to R&B Architects, our open house host.

Alfred Glossbrenner, a business and political leader, hired English-born architect Alfred Grindle to design the house in 1910. The Tudor Revival-style mansion features original chandeliers and sconces, carved limestone fireplaces, hardwood floors, and oak, mahogany and Circassian walnut woodwork.

We’re also offering a Holiday Open House bonus: cross to the southwest corner of 32nd and Meridian streets to visit the 1923 house built by Harry Stutz, creator of the Stutz Bearcat and other famed Indiana-made automobiles, race cars, and firetrucks. The Stutz home matches the buff brick exteriors of the Stutz factories, including what is now The Stutz Business and Arts Center at 10th and Capitol

Indiana Landmarks and our Indiana Automotive affinity group urged The Children’s Museum, which owns the house, to preserve it and provided a grant to Mapleton Fall Creek Development Corp. to assess the cost of rehabbing the long-vacant site as its office. The $300,000 renovation updated mechanical systems and made the first floor accessible while refurbishing the home’s historic interior.
