Description

In this workshop, participants will learn core strategies for creating a safe and engaging environment based on the unique needs and perspectives of older youth in out of school time programs. Attracting and retaining participants in programs serving middle or high school aged youth is a challenge for many out of school time programs. In this workshop, participants will practice utilizing a protocol for incorporating youth voice into the development of community expectations that support emotional and physical safety. Participants will identify structures and routines for ensuring that program activities, offer opportunities for youth to make choices, discover and pursue interests, and contribute meaningfully to their community. Special attention will be paid to incorporating youth leadership, service learning, collaborative problem-solving, and goal-setting into out of school time activities. Participants will also identify youth and adult triggers, explore strategies for helping emerging adults manage emotions, and self-reflect.
