Event description

Description

Conducted by the Indiana Council for the Social Studies at the Indiana History Centery, this workshop is funded by the Library of Congress. In the morning, educators will learn how to locate and use Library of Congress resources while participating in hands-on activities. Learn techniques to guide your students in their understanding, evaluating, and using primary sources with an emphasis on civil rights in order to be better informed citizens.

In the afternoon, the focus will shift to the resources of the Indiana History Center (IHS). We will be looking at local connections to the national narrative through primary sources in the collection with library and archive staff along with the educational team at IHS. There will also be some time to go through and explore exhibits.

Participants from each of the regional workshops will be recruited to create TPS presentations in a content area of their choosing to present within the TPS strand of the 2019 annual ICSS conference.

This workshop will help civic-minded educators develop engaged citizens by:

  • Improving inquiry based teaching using the Library of Congress methodology
  • Interacting with the free civics app Engaging Congress
  • Learning about local primary sources
  • Creating civil rights material to share with colleagues
