LaVaughn Henry, Ph.D., CBE

Banking and Regulatory Policy Analyst, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

October 20, 2017, 12:00 noon–1:00 p.m.

NAR Washington D.C. Office, 500 New Jersey Avenue, NW

12th Floor Event Room

(Light lunch starting at 11:50 a.m.)

First-time homebuyers are typically young adults, with the median age at 32 years old, compared to 28 years in the early 90s’.[1] Meanwhile, the share of young adults 25-34 years old who form their own households and the homeownership rate for this age group have fallen. The homeownership rate stood at 35.3 percent as of 2017 compared to 41 percent in 2000. Delayed marrying age is one factor, but other economic factors are also likely at play.

In this presentation, Dr. LaVaughn Henry will discuss how income, spending/saving, and debt patterns have changed over time among the 18-35 year-old age group, using a variety of publicly available data such as the Consumer Expenditure Survey and the Survey of Consumer Finance. He will discuss the implications of these trends on the accessibility and affordability of homeownership for these young adults.

Dr. LaVaughn Henry is currently a Banking and Regulatory Policy Analyst at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Prior to joining FDIC in 2017, he was a Vice-President and Senior Regional Officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He also worked previously as an economist/analyst in various corporations and government agencies such as PMI Mortgage Insurance, Fannie Mae, Ford Motor Corporation, Price Waterhouse Coopers, the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, the Resolution Trust Corporation, and the U.S. House of Representatives.

Dr. Henry holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University and a B.A in Finance Economics from Rockhurst University. His full CV can be accessed here.
