Inclusivity and Accessibility in a Digital World
Event Information
About this Event
ABOUT OUR EVENT:
Incorporating inclusivity into any product or service is essentially a User Experience (UX) task; that is, it is the responsibility of the UX professional to ensure – we also design to include People with Disabilities. We all take a look at:
1. Common models of disability
2. Types of Disabilities
3. Universal, accessible and inclusive design
Identifying the challenges each type of disability encounters when they interact with your product or service, we learn how to design with more inclusion. We should ask ourselves if someone can sense, understand, and interact with our design? Addressing those needs, is the key to ensuring we’ve resolved those in the final result of what we’ve built.
For the web, we have Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to provide guidance for accessibility best practices. In a physical environment, we have the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) to provide guidance on the legal requirements. Educating ourselves on these topics helps us better evaluate products and services with an inclusive mind and “putting all people at the center of the process.”

ABOUT OUR PRESENTER:
Ann Junker is a User Experience Designer at West Bend Mutual Insurance. She has worn many hats over her career, such as Senior UX Researcher/Designer and Front-end Developer, highly focused on Accessibility. She is a mentor for others coming into the field and as a certified accessibility professional has trained multiple departments in accessibility legal and audit policies, web development best practices, and assistive technology.
She started her career learning HTML and grew from there by reading books, such as the Yale Style Guide and Jacob Nielsen’s Designing Web Usability. She is a life-long learner and wants to keep trying new things. With 20 years of experience as a designer and developer, she has led clients and teams through projects from discovery to deployment, with a focus on user needs, business goals and incorporating tangible technology.
She learned the key ingredient is listening to the needs and wants of the user, so the responsive websites, software and native apps she creates becomes what the user anticipated. Her learning didn’t stop there, obtaining a Master’s degree in Human Computer Interaction (HCI); graduating with distinction. Additionally, she’s been a research assistant, a scholarship recipient, a poster presenter at the HCI International Conference and published a paper in the proceedings. linkedin.com/in/annjunker
