The purpose of the Inclusive Playspaces seminar is to share what South Dublin County Council (SDCC) has learned about universal design over the past five years developing accessible, inclusive playspaces. 
The seminar is targeted at Public Realm designers, parks staff, planners, and any others who have a role, or interest, in providing inclusive playspaces and developing healthy, sustainable communities. 
Event Information
When the Council started its Playspace Programme in 2014 there was very little information available on how public play areas should be designed to include disabled children. Councils have a variety of policy and legislative responsibilities with regard to providing accessible facilities and services to all disabled people (the Disability Act 2005, UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and so on). In order to meet these responsibilities and commitments South Dublin County Council developed a playspace design programme with accessibility as a core aim.
Mayor Vicki Casserly will open the seminar. 
The keynote speaker is David Coleman (Clinical Psychologist, Radio and TV Broadcaster, Columnist and Author). David’s presentation will explore the importance of play for the physical and mental health of children and young people of all ages and abilities, and for facilitating sustainable intergenerational communities. 
Presentations will also be made by Laurence Colleran, SDCC Senior Executive Parks Superintendent, and SDCC Chief Executive Daniel McLoughlin.
South Dublin County Council, County Hall is wheelchair accessible and the Council Chamber is fitted with an Audio Frequency Induction Loop (AFIL).
This event is being held as part of the South Dublin County programme of events for National Accessibility Week 2019. National Accessibility Week (led by local authorities across the country), is an important opportunity to encourage all people to focus on issues of accessibility and universal design. The Week provides Councils, businesses, schools and colleges, community groups and so on with a valuable opportunity to highlight the accessibility of their facilities and services. Various activities and media are also used to encourage wider society to be more inclusive of the varied access needs of disabled people of all ages.
Each year the Week takes place around the 3rd December which is International Day of Disabled Persons. This year National Accessibility Week takes place from Monday, 25 November until Monday, 2 December 2019.
