Event description

Description

Join us as we present our inaugural inclusive excellence speaker, Oluwaferanmi “Feranmi” Okanlami, MD, MS on the subject Intersections of Disability and Medicine.

Dr. Okanlami is on a mission to “disabuse disability” by proving that disabled does not mean unable. In his third year as an orthopedic surgery resident at Yale, Dr. Okanlami was involved in an accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. With a combination of rehabilitation and determination, he was able to regain significant movement and even walk with some assistance. Today he is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, as well as the Director of Medical Student Programs in the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion, at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Okanlami has been featured on NPR and invited to numerous speaking engagements that include the Association of American Medical College conferences. He is an advocate and mentor for physicians and patients with similar backgrounds and is dedicated to the belief that disability does not mean inability.

Appetizers and beverages will be provided at 5 pm.

Parking Options:

  • Free parking is available in Lots 10002 and 10003 after 5 pm (Lot 10002 northeast corner of 7th Street and Van Buren Street, Lot 10003 7th Street and Polk Street).
