The Inaugural Sounders FC Analytics Conference
Presented by Sportlogiq
June 22 – 23, 2019


Seattle Sounders FC is excited to host the inaugural Sounders Analytics Conference this June!

The objective of the Analytics Conference is to highlight the importance and the rising usage of analytics to help coaches and front-office executives make better decisions. Application of analytics in soccer/futbol is the primary focus of the conference, but examples from other sports will also be included.

The conference features invited lectures by practitioners of analytics at the highest levels in clubs and sports organizations from North America and around the world.

Lectures will focus on the application side of analytics:

  • Real-world, day-to-day challenges of analysts communicating with decision-makers
  • Infrastructural challenges with data
  • Integrating video and data analyses

Presenters will be available for Q&A and small-group conversations. Attendees will have ample opportunities to interact with the presenters and each other.

Saturday, June 22 — Day 1 PM — 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm
Sunday, June 23 — Day 2 AM — 9:00 am to 12:30 pm

  • Sarah Rudd — VP of Software and Analytics, StatDNA, Arsenal Football Club, London
    Sarah is the VP of Software and Analytics at StatDNA, Arsenal FC's in-house analytics department. She oversees the development of analytical models and bespoke software across several departments such as scouting, medical and performance analysis. Prior to working at StatDNA she was a member of the contextual relevance team at Bing. She earned her MBA from the University of Washington and a BA in Environmental Science / Computer Science from Columbia University.

  • Miguel Rios — Football Intelligence Manager, OptaPro
    Miguel has wealth of experience in football/soccer having worked at Arsenal, FC Barcelona, Brentford, Fulham, and most recently at Wolves in various roles of scouting analysis, talent ID, and recruitment.

  • Dafydd Steele — Statistical Researcher, Liverpool Football Club
    Dafydd is a statistical researcher based at LFC's Melwood training ground. He provides key statistical support and insight across several areas including recruitment, video analysis, sports science, and player development at the 1st team training ground and the Academy. He joined the research department headed by Dr. Ian Graham in Summer 2013. Prior to that, he worked as a quant analyst in energy trading firms as well as a period at Lehman Brothers in equity markets. Dafydd holds a Research Masters in probability theory from the University of Amsterdam.

  • Sam Gregory — Data Analyst, Sportlogiq
    Sam works as a data analyst at Sportlogiq focusing primarily on soccer using both tracking and event data. While finishing his schooling in economics he started working in soccer analytics. He worked as an analytics writer for Sportsnet then started his own podcast and consultancy with Analytics FC. After finishing his degree, Sam joined the data science team at Opta where he worked with a variety of professional club and media clients. He brings all of this experience to Sportlogiq, developing and delivering new soccer insights.

  • Evin Keane — Data Analyst, Sportlogiq
    Evin Keane is a data analyst with Sportlogiq, where he has been working to exploit the value of Sportlogiq's combined tracking and event data in any way he can dream up. His day-to-day work involves picking the brains of colleagues with domain expertise, pillaging open-source libraries, and occasionally having his own ideas. He arrived in the sports analytics space by degrees: after his bachelor in mechanical engineering in NUI Galway, he worked as a robot programmer, mechanical design engineer, and field engineer for a machine vision-driven robotics startup in Tennessee. Evin's first experience working with sports data came during his time studying the various influences on bookmakers' odds as a risk analyst with Paddy Power Betfair in Dublin.

  • Sam Robertson — Head of Research & Innovation, Western Bulldogs–Victoria University partnership
    Professor Sam Robertson is the Head of Research & Innovation for the Western Bulldogs –Victoria University partnership. Additionally, Sam currently works on applied sports research projects with organizations such as FIFA, Golf Australia, the Australian Football League, as well as teams competing in the NBA and EPL. Sam’s research predominantly focuses on the application of analytics to applied sports performance problems, and he has published more than 100 refereed articles in the area. The majority of this work focuses on enhancing athlete learning and skill, and on improving the decision-making of both athletes and organizations.

  • Devin Pleuler — Senior Manager for Analytics, Toronto FC
    Entering his fifth season with Toronto FC, Devin Pleuler currently serves as their Senior Manager of Analytics. In Toronto, Devin is responsible for the integration of analytics and data science into various soccer-facing aspects of the organization. Devin holds a Bachelor of Computer Science from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, where he occasionally escaped the bench as a goalkeeper for the school's NCAA D3 men's soccer program.
