Event description

Description

This meeting, the inaugural meeting of the U.S. Women Veterans Advocacy Initiative (formerly known as the Women Veterans Alliance of the Mountain State) is historical and ground-breaking, the first of its kind in the state of West Virginia. It will take place on October 13, in Charleston, WV, at the Bricks & Barrels Restaurant. The meeting is open to all women veterans of all branches of service in the U.S. military. However, seats are limited. If you are not able to be at the meeting in person, provisions are being made for the meeting to be videotaped LIVE in the Facebook group of the same name, but you must be a member of that group.

West Virginia woman veteran Donna Decker, who created and launched the first West Virginia Women Veterans Celebration Day at Chief Logan State Park in July, will be in attendance and speaking at this meeting. Included in her efforts was the Proclamation signed by Governor Justice deeming June 12, as West Virginia Women Veterans Day.

Gone are the days of women being minorities. But there are still issues affecting women. And there are even bigger issues that are affecting women veterans that are going unnoticed, unaddressed and most often untreated. And it is our duty as woman veterans to join together to network, connect, and advocate for one another in order to make sure our issues and needs are on the top of the agenda and being heard and addressed going forward. We will no longer take a back seat to men's initiatives.

We also want to celebrate each other for our successes, no matter how small, because in celebration we build self-esteem, character, kindness, sincerity, empowerment, long-lasting friendship and sisterhood.

Women veterans are asked to attend, network, speak, contribute, bring resources, bring other women veterans, and join the advocacy as a volunteer in your state or region. In fact, we are counting on you. We need your stories and your expertise. The more woman power we have, the more we can work together to get things accomplished.

Some of the topics for discussion are homelessness, suicide, mental illness, PTSD, TBI, military sexual trauma, healthcare, employment, veteran-owned businesses, training, child care, single-parenting, relationships, recovery and so much more.
