Event description
Primary and Secondary teachers who want to help all their students develop a “can do” attitude to mathematics

About this Event

This project is aimed at Primary and Secondary teachers who want to help all their students develop a “can do” attitude to mathematics. There will be a mixture of Primary and Secondary teachers ensuring mathematical resilience is developed coherently across phases in the region. As the course requires completion of an action research project each school is asked to send two teachers who will work together on this project. Each pair of teachers will be supported in conducting a small scale action research study in their own context.

Objectives of the course

To understand what educational research says about developing mathematical resilience in students in both Primary and Secondary mathematics classrooms. To work collaboratively across the region to develop resources and approaches that help students to become more resilient in mathematics. To become a community of learners and share experiences and successes.

Dates

All of the meetings will be held at the in the Library at the Walton Hall Campus of The Open University, the exact room to be advised. A second cohort meeting on different dates will be offered if demand allows.

Session dates:

14:00 – 16:30, Wednesday 9th October 2019

14:00 – 16:30, Wednesday 15th January 2020

14:00 – 16:30, Wednesday 10th June 2020

Participants will

• Attend all three half-day regional meetings at the Open University.

• Complete a small scale action research study, noting progress in a reflective journal.

Participating schools will

• Release participants for all three half days for resource planning

• Support participants for three half-days in-school development of linked project

Enigma hub will

• Help disseminate the project more widely.

About our course leader: Dr Clare Lee: has extensive experience both as a mathematics teacher and as a university lecturer. She has written widely about mathematics teaching (e.g. Learning to Teach Mathematics in the Secondary School) and about assessment for learning (e.g. Assessment for Learning: Putting it into Practice). She was Research Fellow on the Kings’ Formative Assessment Project which led the way on Assessment for Learning and now works for the Open University on their PGCE, Masters and Doctoral degrees. Recently her research interest has been directed towards developing ideas about mathematical resilience, working in schools to help students develop a positive stance towards mathematics so that they are equipped to make a positive choice to study further or are empowered to use mathematical ideas in their careers or day-to-day lives.
