Preeminent Haydn scholar H. C. Robbins Landon wrote that the Lord Nelson Mass is arguably Haydn's greatest single composition. Originally titled Missa in Angustiis (Mass in Troubled Times) by Haydn, the work was composed in 1798 during a terrifying time for Austria because of Napoleon’s threat to the country. The work, by turns anguished, radiant, and jubilant, concludes with an urgent plea for peace.
Also on the program is San Francisco-based composer David Conte’s September Sun. Written in memory of those who perished on September 11, 2001, the text by John Stirling Walker forms an acrostic on the line “God dwells in joy in the midst of sorrow.” The performance concludes with Mormon Tabernacle Choir Music Director Mack Wilberg’s gently uplifting arrangement of the African-American spiritual Peace Like a River.
