Toronto Premiere and Panel Discussion
A Women Deliver 2019 Satellite Event
After taking audiences by storm in Africa, Europe, and North America, the award-winning In The Name Of Your Daughter finally comes to Toronto!
In this unmissable film about some of the world’s bravest girls, you will meet children whose voices have not been heard in over five thousand years—Tanzanian girls as young as eight who are standing up for their human right to follow their dreams.
At London’s Raindance film festival last October, reviewers said:
“This is a powerful and beautiful melange of heartbreak, bravery and HOPE. A magnificent film of extreme importance created from a place of love.”
When the film aired on BBC television in February, it was critics' pick of the day in every major London newspaper.
In The Name Of Your Daughter tells the story of girls like Rosie Makore, 11, who had to make the toughest choice of her young life: submit to female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage, or risk her life and run away from home.
And it’s the story of human rights advocate Rhobi Samwelly, who confronts her community and protects the girls in her Safe House in the spectacular Serengeti District in Northern Tanzania. See the trailer here.
After the Ottawa screening attended by Senator Jim Munson, Senator Munson, on the floor of the Senate, called Rhobi Samwelly 'a shining light; a human rights hero.' And he called the film 'incredible... compelling... heartbreaking... it should be an Academy Award winning documentary.'
The film won ‘Best Canadian Feature Documentary' at NorthWestFest, 'Best Documentary' in Oslo, the ‘Jury Prize’ in Los Angeles, ‘Best of Festival’ at Zonta in Ontario, 'Best Documentary' at the Courage Film Festival in Berlin, 'Award of Excellence Impact Award.' And it t has just been nominated for three Leo awards in British Columbia-Best Feature Documentary, Best Director, and Best Writer.
Giselle Portenier, the filmmaker, will be at the screening to answer questions and share her insights.
The film is destined to have an important role in the movement to end FGM, especially among youth.
You will be deeply touched—and inspired-by these childrens’ voices.

FAQs
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
There is no minimum age requirement; in fact, children as young as 12 have seen the documentary and have been inspired to take action by it. The film has been shown in British Columbia to youth in High Schools. In Copenhagen, where the film was also shown at a high school, the school decided to make the documentary an official part of the school’s syllabus and exam process; indeed, it was a 13-year-old Danish girl who pronounced the film ‘life-changing.’ Sweden has also adopted the film as part of its curriculum, and there are more school screenings planned in Canada and elsewhere, so please feel free to bring your adolescent children—just make sure they have some understanding of the topic before-hand.
