In the Name of Love is a stunning tribute to one of the greatest humanitarians of our time. With multi-talented singer/songwriter/actor Martin Luther McCoy; the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, featuring the Dynamic Ms. Faye Carol and premiering a new body of work supported by the East Bay Community Foundation; the powerful 55-voice Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir; and the 300-voice Oakland Children’s Community Choir under the direction of Melanie DeMore; our 12thAnnual Tribute promises to be a profound celebration of civil rights and an amazing evening of music.
Archival footage of Dr. King’s moving oratories will be interspersed throughout the evening, and the Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award will be presented to an Oakland citizen working tirelessly to make a difference.
All these elements help to make this one of Oakland's most significant events of the year.
In the Name of Love remains Oakland’s only annual non-denominational musical tribute to Dr. King. It is an extremely significant civic and cultural event, bringing our diverse community together to pay tribute to Dr. King’s message of community, equality and inclusion.
