Description

The Timbergriffen Theater Companyis proud to present In the Heights! Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, award winning writer of Hamilton and the music of Moana. We are so excited to bring this powerful show to the Arvada and Federal Heights communities. This show is a slice of life about a Dominican neighborhood in New York city. It's the 4th of July, and Nina, a first generation college student, comes home from Standford after she's dropped out. Will she stay home and pursue her summer romance with Benny or go back and try again? Usnavi grapples with whether to stay in New York running his bodega or go home to the Dominican Republic. Abuela's life is changed forever and the neighborhood is turned upside down. This show will make you smile, it might make you cry, and it will leave you with a sense of pride and love for all that makes us who we are.

At the time the piece was written Hispanic characters were rare and not featured, stories about immigrants, and stories told using Spanish vocabularly wasn't done. This piece was relevant then, and it's even more relevant right now. We love showcasing our Spanish speaking students in roles like Usnavi and Nina, and are enjoying sharing and teaching our non-spanish speakers about the language and culture through roles like Abuela and Benny. The TimberGriffen Theater Company is the joint effort of Early College of Arvada and the Pinnacle Charter School. Both of our institutions have diverse communities and this show is an oppourtunity to find all the things that we have in common, to get in touch with our immigrant roots whether we came last week or 100 years ago. It's a chance to celebrate our Spanish speaking students and their families and share stories that echo their stories. Theater is the greatest form of empathy and is a powerful tool to share our culture and history. Theater is capable of holding a mirror up to our world helping us see what's great as well as what needs fixing.

We hope you enjoy our production of this incredible show. Everyday we're excited to do this work and we want every seat in the house filled because it's going to be great!
