Event description
Join David Sedaris for an event and signing to celebrate his new book, HAPPY-GO-LUCKY.

About this event

Parnassus Books is pleased to present an IN-STORE event and signing line with DAVID SEDARIS for his new book, HAPPY-GO-LUCKY. If you would like to attend, please read this event information carefully and in its entirety, as it contains very important info regarding event details.

Each ticket is $32.00 and includes one copy of the book and admits one person to the store for the reading and signing, or to the signing line only. Every attendee must have a separate ticket.

  • Seating Tickets The first 100 tickets for this event will reserve a seat in the store for the reading. Additionally, this ticket guarantees a spot in the signing line after the reading.
  • Standing Room Tickets Once the first 100 tickets have been purchased, the next 50 tickets guarantee standing room only for the reading. Additionally, this ticket guarantees a spot in the signing line after the reading.
  • Signing Line Only Tickets: Once we reach capacity in the store, we will begin forming a signing line outside of the store. Each signing line only ticket will guarantee a spot in the signing line after the reading. Your ticket number will assign you to a signing line group, and you will be invited to join the line based on your ticket number. Each ticket admits one person. We encourage you to patronize our fellow businesses around the store while you wait for your signing line group to be called.

There is to be NO photography, recording, or video for the entire evening, reading, or signing.

While on book tour, Mr. Sedaris loves doing book signings and readings in independent bookstores themselves, and per his request, this event will not be moved to a larger theater/auditorium venue. He will stay and sign for every attendee with every type of ticket no matter how late the signing goes.

You will receive your book when you check in at the event on June 13th.

If you are unable to attend, you can still order a signed copy of HAPPY-GO-LUCKY, by visiting our website and placing an online order prior to 9:00 a.m. on June 13th.

About the book:

David Sedaris returns with his first new collection of personal essays since the bestselling Calypso.

Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes.

But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most. To cope, he walks for miles through a nearly deserted city, smelling only his own breath. He vacuums his apartment twice a day, fails to hoard anything, and contemplates how sex workers and acupuncturists might be getting by during quarantine.

As the world gradually settles into a new reality, Sedaris too finds himself changed. His offer to fix a stranger’s teeth rebuffed, he straightens his own, and ventures into the world with new confidence. Newly orphaned, he considers what it means, in his seventh decade, no longer to be someone’s son. And back on the road, he discovers a battle-scarred America: people weary, storefronts empty or festooned with Help Wanted signs, walls painted with graffiti reflecting the contradictory messages of our time: Eat the Rich. Trump 2024. Black Lives Matter.

In Happy-Go-Lucky, David Sedaris once again captures what is most unexpected, hilarious, and poignant about these recent upheavals, personal and public, and expresses in precise language both the misanthropy and desire for connection that drive us all. If we must live in interesting times, there is no one better to chronicle them than the incomparable David Sedaris.

About the author:

David Sedaris is the author of twelve previous books, including most recently, Carnival of Snackery, The Best of Me, and Calypso. He is a regular contributor to The New Yorker and BBC Radio 4. In 2019, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is the recipient of the Thurber Prize for American Humor, the Jonathan Swift International Literature Prize for Satire and Humor, and the Terry Southern Prize for Humor.
