Fifty thousand years ago, Oregon was a spectacular place. Giant ice age beasts thrived in unimaginable numbers with a multitude of species. Mammoth and mastodon shared the land with two species of giant bison, horses, camels, and giant ground sloth. Deer, elk and antelope were stalked by giant wolves, lions, and bear. A beaver the size of a black bear populated what would one day become the "Beaver State.” The Willamette Valley Pleistocene Project explores the late Pleistocene and early Holocene of the Willamette River Valley in Northwest Oregon. Composed of local volunteers and resources, avocational paleontologists, land owners, and local government working alongside trained professionals and museum staff, our goal is to discover, study, and preserve our prehistoric past. Willamette Valley Pleistocene Project maintains the fossils as a public trust for the people of Oregon, and the collection, along with all the data, will ultimately be donated to a selected institution.

Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the presentation begins at 4:00 p.m. This event is free for FANs members. Non-members will be charged $3 at the door. You can join FANs at this event; membership is just $10 per person per year.

About Mike Full:

Presenter Mike Full is the founder and site administrator of the Willamette Valley Pleistocene Project. A retired Police Officer and native Oregonian, Mike has had a lifelong fascination with fossils and prehistoric life. He spends his summers floating, snorkeling and scuba diving along various Willamette Valley waterways with students, researchers, scientists and interested civilians, in search of Ice Age Giants. During the rest of the year, Mike preserves, repairs, restores, identifies and adds the fossils to a website database that is open to the public. He is often found giving presentations to schools, civic groups and clubs, and casting and finishing replicas of local fossils.

This event is sponsored by Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area (FANs), a group founded in 2011 by landowners surrounding the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area in Central Oregon who came together over their shared love of nearby public lands. The focus area of FANs includes many special places such as Steelhead Falls, Alder Springs, the Peninsula, Otter Bench and Scout Camp. FANs membership forms will be available at this presentation. You can also become a member by visiting our website at www.fansofdeschutes.org. We look forward to seeing you at this event!
