Multi-instrumentalist Abdou M'boup, born in a small town in Senegal to a family of oral historians and musicians, pioneered incorporating traditional instruments into Senegalese popular music in the 1970s. M'boup now leads his own band, Waakaw (“Country Boys” in his native Wolof) and teaches World Music Rhythm at the New School University (NYC).
